MY CHILD IS NEW TO LACROSSE. HOW CAN HE/SHE GET ON A TEAM?
The club is open to all levels of experience. The Coyotes are among the few who have always offered an Introductory program for boys and girls as part of our Fall Ball program. Players who participate in our annual Fall Ball program will have priority should roster constraints emerge for spring season teams.
BECAUSE THE COYOTES ARE A CLUB, DO THEY ACCEPT PLAYERS FROM ALL OVER THE BAY AREA?
Players are encouraged to play for the club closest to their home. The Coyotes typically draw players from the mid-Peninsula – Burlingame, San Mateo, Hillsborough, Millbrae, Half Moon Bay, San Bruno –to South San Francsico. With that said, should players not find space in a club more proximate to their home, they will be welcome to explore playing options at our club.
MY CHILD IS UNDER THE AGE OF 7 – DO YOU HAVE A PROGRAM THAT HE/SHE COULD PARTICIPATE IN?
In 2012, the Coyotes began a co-ed Pups program for children between the ages of 5 and 7 year’s old. Check the site periodically to see when our next session will begin!
DO GIRLS AND BOYS PLAY BY THE SAME RULES IN GENERAL?
No! The girls’ and boys’ games share certain fundamental running and stick skill requirement, but are governed by very different rules and equipment needs. From U9 through U15, the Coyotes sponsor a full complement of separate teams for girls and boys.
WHERE DO I PURCHASE EQUIPMENT?
The best two local alternatives for equipment (and remember, the sticks are very different for boys versus girls!) are Sling It! in Belmont and Goetz Brothers in Redwood City. Girls need cleats, lacrosse-specific eye protection/goggles, a mouth guard and a GIRLS stick. Boys playing on a team will need cleats, athletic supporter, gloves, arm pads, shoulder pads, a helmet, a mouth guard and a BOYS stick.
WHEN IS LACROSSE SEASON?
Lacrosse is a spring sport and pre-season practices will typically start in late January and the game season will run from March through May. Additionally, we conduct a fall ball program in mid-late autumn each year and it is the hope and expectation that players who plan to play in the Spring season participate in the Fall.
DO THE COYOTES PARTICIPATE IN A LEAGUE?
The Coyotes are members of the West Bay Lacrosse League (WBLL) and compete against other member clubs of the WBLL
WHO DETERMINES CLUB POLICY AND WHO COACHES FOR THE COYOTES?
The Board of Directors for the club determines policy and selects coaches. Our coaches typically have a great deal of experience in the game, having often both played and coached the sport. Most coaches are volunteer parents, but we often supplement with more recent college players.
HOW ARE TEAMS FORMED?
The Girls’ and Boys’ Directors, with the Coaches, utilize Fall Ball to determine what level teams will be fielded in the following spring season. Player placement is determined by experience, ability and assessment of potential. We work diligently to find a spot for everyone and place players at a level they will enjoy and best develop their skills. At times, demand may exceed roster spots, and priority is typically given to players who have participated in Fall Ball and have shown a commitment to the club in past seasons. At times, we may form “practice squads” so players can develop their skills with a team so that they will be in position to play in games in the future.
